Take A Break

By February 24, 2018 No Comments

Everybody enjoys their snacks and sweets from time to time whether it be ice cream, chips, or chocolate.  Taking a calculated break from our daily treats gives the body a rest from the sugar and fat that keeps us in a trance.

Most of us have been eating in the same patterns for decades.  Favorites from our youth often remain staples despite changes in every other aspect of our lives.  How much we move, exercise, play and sit changes as we age.  Metabolism, stress, and hormone levels also change.  Appreciate the reality of this evolution, ignoring the impact on your health can be significant.

Mix it up!  Take a week off from sugar in your coffee.  Only have fruit for dessert for a few days.  Hit the shut off valve and give your body a break from whatever your vice is.  All processed foods are options.  The bag of chips with lunch, the muffin with breakfast, or the huge sandwich roll are great examples.

There is a psychological benefit to not feeling like you have to give something up “forever”.  Start with a few days if you have to.  This is an exercise meant to bring more awareness to your relationship with food.  Notice if this is really difficult for you.  You can always begin by taking one day, or even one meal, to experiment with.

After a little bit of practice, you will have some insight as to the impact processed foods have on you.  In the beginning you may notice the cravings.  Refined sugars and flours have a tremendous impact on our guts and connected brain signals.  Work through it, eventually you will notice how much better it feels to be free of those relationships.  As always, if you need a replacement choose real food, not other processed foods.  Pick something this week to “break up” with and see how it goes!
