Ways to Navigate Unhealthy Food at a Party

By February 11, 2018 No Comments

Society does not make eating healthy easy!  If you’re heading out to a work function or a party with some friends, good chance the food options aren’t going to be healthy.  You don’t HAVE to eat everything in front of you!  Here’s a few strategies to keep you in control…

Make a Commitment Beforehand:  Make a plan!  Studies show over and over again that identifying specifics gives you a much greater chance of success.  Instead of thinking “I’m going to be pretty healthy at the party”, go with something more detailed like “I’m going to have only one drink and avoid the pizza altogether”.  If you have the opportunity to know what will be at the party, it will be even easier.  Talk to a friend or look at the menu online.  Make a decision on not having dessert (or treating yourself if you want to).  A mindful approach to decision making will leave you feeling good the next day.

Bring Something Healthy: Nothing beats bringing food and drink that you like to consume.  If you’re on a healthy kick, look up a fun recipe and spend a little time prepping it.  Not only will you have something to fill up on, everyone will appreciate the effort.  In most cases, people are looking for tasty healthy eats!

Eat Before You Go: A great strategy to keep yourself in complete control.  You won’t be starving and tempted by whatever is in front of you.  Having some healthy snacks or a light meal beforehand gives you the flexibility to do whatever you want.  If there is some healthy looking options, dig in.  If there is nothing you want to eat, you can do a little picking, keep your portion sizes small or simply pass.
