The Many Benefits of Walking

Want to improve your mood, sharpen your memory, increase your metabolism, lower your anxiety, burn calories, help your heart, and boost your immune system? Go for a walk!

Walking is movement in its purest form. The human body is designed to ambulate from one point to the next, one foot in front of the other. It can be relaxing motion for some while being a challenging exercise for others.  No matter who you are, if you want to improve just about every major health marker you can imagine, schedule regular walks.

The next time you see an upright, healthy 85 year old, ask him/her what they do on a regular basis. Guaranteed regular walking is top of the list. It stretches and activates all of the postural muscles in the body. The transverse nature of walking patterns will strengthen and tone your core muscles. Inside of your body your cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems are all regulated and enhanced.

The benefits of walking are on display after surgeries or extended times off of our feet. The basic loading mechanisms restore bone density, build muscle tissue, and stimulate the nervous system. It will release endorphins and fire up creative areas in your brain. The quiet cadence of your gait naturally reduces anxiety as you create a break from our over stimulated environments.

Don’t underestimate walking! Even if you “exercise” regularly by practicing yoga, taking spin classes, and strength training, you will still benefit by putting aside time to walk regularly. It is the exercise that ages better then all others.

Here are a few tips:

  • Schedule walks with spouses, kids, and friends
  • Take the stairs
  • Park far away from work and stores
  • Get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful scenery
